Trey Songz Gives Back This Thanksgiving at Benefit Concert

By Aramis Grant

Hot R&B sensation Trey Songz will be performing at a Thanksgiving benefit concert for his Angels with Heart Foundation on November 25. The Grammy-nominated singer has been compared to the likes of R&B greats Al Greene and Marvin Gaye, for his smooth, sultry voice and “baby making music.”

The fairly new charity, created just last year by the Grammy-nominated singer, was created in effort to engage members of his fan club in taking part in more positive work in their communities. How awesome is that?! His fan club, known as “Trey’s Angels” were encouraged to give back through random acts of kindness, donating their time and more to support the cause of improving the communities they live in and those in surrounding cities, with a special focus on the youth.  The group who took part in Songz’s call-to-action were often referred to as “Angles with Heart,” so Songz settled on that as the name of his foundation.

Songz has teamed up with popular NYC radio station HOT 97 to present the one-day benefit concert, where Songz will be taking the stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The concert is aimed at promoting the amazing mission of the Angels with Hearts Foundation to help underprivileged children and at-risk youth in a variety of ways.

“Because I have been blessed to be in the situation where I am able to touch and be heard by so many people, it’s only right that I use that voice to give back and empower the youth, strengthen families and communities” says Songz on the foundation website.

Declaring November as the official “Angels with Heart” month, Songz will be rounding out this month with his birthday on the 28th and the release of his new album Inevitable,  that drops on November 29. (Happy Birthday, Trey! And congrats on the album!)

The declaration of Angels with Heart month also celebrates the hard work of his devoted members.

“My fans don’t just go hard for me, they go hard for humanity,” said Songz.

Fans are encouraged to contribute to the singer’s efforts by downloading Songz’s video Top of the World, or by downloading the album, Inevitable, as a portion of the proceeds will go to the foundation.  Tickets and VIP packages for the benefit are available now, here on Ticketmaster.

Can’t attend the concert? Don’t worry … the performance will be internationally broadcast for those who miss out.

Paris Hilton – a Hilton heiress commonly known for making headlines in the Hollywood scene isn’t who many may perceive her to be.  For years, Paris has identified herself as an animal lover and activist.  She has also contributed to countless charities supporting causes such as breast cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, homelessness and world hunger.

Just yesterday, November 15, Hilton took to Twitter to share her experiences while in Bali.  Tweeting pictures of her time spent with orphans and raising awareness of Indonesian stray dogs, Paris expressed how great it felt to “give back to those in need”.

Leonardo DiCaprio Raises Millions For Charity On His Special Day

By Amarylis Martinez

November 5:  $3 million.  November 11:  $1.3 million.  In a week’s time, Leonardo DiCaprio has raised millions of dollars for more than one cause.  Just six days before his birthday, DiCaprio co-chaired the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) first annual Art + Film Gala.  Helping make the event a success by raising $3 million for the art of film making, the actor’s philanthropic efforts did not stop there.

In true humanitarian fashion, Leonardo DiCaprio celebrated his birthday while raising money for his charity, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.  DiCaprio’s foundation supports wildlife conservation and provides disaster relief in countries such as Haiti.

11.11.11, a date deemed lucky by many, was oddly enough Leo’s actual birth date – as well as the date his newest film, J. Edgar, hit theaters.  With much to celebrate, DiCaprio rented out New York’s Avenue night club where an array of A-listers gathered together to celebrate their dear friend’s 37th birthday.  The guest list included family members, Victoria’s Secret models, assorted billionaires, and celebrities such as Russell Simmons, Robert De Niro, Naomi Campbell and Edward Norton – to name a few.

DiCaprio, who threw this birthday bash for himself, raised money for his charity by having a cash bar and auctioning off luxury items.  One popular luxury item, a 15-litre bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne – hand painted by artist Peter Tunney, was auctioned off for $50,000.  By the end of the night a total of $1.3 million had been raised effortlessly, all while partying the night away.

While some may think that birthdays are all about the person being celebrated, DiCaprio found a way to make it about others.  The J. Edgar star continues to use his power in support of his causes by raising funds in his everyday life.

Rolex Announces Initiative Mentors at NYC Gala

By Aramis Grant

Rolex held its bi-annual Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative Gala, last night at New York’s Lincoln Center, celebrating its 2010-2011 mentorships and announced new mentors for 2012-2013.

The Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative is an international philanthropic program created to assist extraordinary, rising artists to achieve their full potential. It seeks out these artists from around the world and brings them together with great masters, for a year of creative collaboration in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.

The six internationally recognized master artists announced last night, will serve as mentors in dance, film, literature, music, theater and visual arts in 2012-2013.

Each mentor “will select a talented young artist for a year of creative dialogue and exchange,” as expressed on the initiative press release. The mentors are: Canadaian author Margaret Atwood, French theater director Patrice Chèreau, Brazilian singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil, South African visual artist William Kentridge, Taiwanese choreographer Lin Hwai-min and American film editor and sound designer Walter Murch.

As explained by the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, “Each mentor will spend at least six weeks, over the course of a year, with his or her protégé. The individual pair will determine the structure, time and place of those meetings. In the past, some protégés have chosen to move to their mentors’ cities to allow for more sustained interactions, while others have decided to conduct their relationship by phone and email with regular visits to each other’s homes, studios, movie sets or rehearsal rooms. Each protégé receives $25,000 to support his or her participation in the programme. At the conclusion of the mentoring year, each protégé is eligible for an additional $25,000 for the creation of a new work.”

Past mentors include Martin Scorsese, Toni Morrison and Mira Nair among others.

Last night, a bunch of A-list celebrities attended the gala including Scorsese, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, and Paula Patton (who before starring in “Precious,” shadowed Denzel Washington). Also present, was Tony-award winning director Julie Taymor (her work includes Broadway’s The Lion King and Spider Man: Turn off the Dark — Taymor was a mentor during the initiative’s third cycle).

Winter Just Got A Little More Fabolous

By Amarylis Martinez

With the temperatures dropping and an early snowfall in New York City it is imperative that all New Yorkers bundle up.  According to the Coalition for the Homeless, each night more than 40,000 people – including more than 16,000 children – experience homelessness in New York City.  Def Jam rapper and Brooklyn native, Fabolous has taken a stand for this cause launching his first annual Three Kings Coat Drive through his newly founded charity foundation, A Fabolous Way.

In an interview with Pix11 Fabolous was quoted saying:

The winter is coming and it’s getting cold and people need coats and people don’t have the opportunity to go out and buy themselves coats. So, we wanted to encourage other people who have coats to donate or donate winter gear. There’s plenty of people with two or three coats in their closets that they never wear.

The Three Kings Coat Drive is being supported by two well known icons in the City That Never Sleeps, Yankee Robinson Cano and Giants player Ahmad Bradshaw.  In coalition with New York Cares, Dr. Jays and Hot97 the Three Kings Coat Drive began on November 1 and will last until December 1 with the goal of collecting 100,000 coats this winter.  All Dr. Jays clothing store locations in New York City and New Jersey will serve as the coat drop-off sites.  As a token of appreciation, every donor will receive 10% off their next coat purchase at participating Dr. Jays’ stores.

During the Three Kings Coat Drive launch, Fabolous was present at Dr. Jays in Manhattan collecting coats.  Appropriately, the first coat donated was a popular New York Yankees jacket.  Surprisingly, singer Trey Songz (who was in town promoting his new album) stopped by to show his support for Fabolous and his first annual Three Kings Coat Drive.

Fabolous has been actively spreading the word and creating awareness by personally tweeting about the coat drive.  Anyone who takes a picture donating a coat will be retweeted and followed by Fabolous himself.  Help spread the word and tweet using the hashtag #3kingscoatdriveNYC.

Twilight Saga: Breaking — Into Music?

By Aramis Grant

Commonly known for his hair, blood-sucking beauty, and hardcore abs, Twilight movie star Robert Pattinson can now be known as a rockstar, who does it all for a good cause.

In a recent interview, Pattinson sat down with Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson to discuss the “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1” sex scene that has Hollywood and all his fans buzzing. Although Pattison jokingly blames co-star Kristen Stewart’s aggressiveness during the scene, to call for a re-edit (otherwise forcing the movie to be produced as an R rated film), he does admit to having a good time recording the long-awaited wedding scene and said it was a day he’ll remember for a long time.

With the Twilight Saga coming to a bitter sweet end (part 2 is the final installment of the saga), Pattinson touched upon his other interests and ventures – one being his involvement in “Band From TV,” a celebrity rock band that consists of actors, musicians, and athletes who started as a group that shared a love for music, but transformed to a band that fills venues, playing rock and roll for charitable causes.

“Actors always want to be rockstars and rockstars, actors,” Pattinson said of performing with the group.

Band From TV is dedicated to making a difference in advancing and supporting the charities its members feel passionately about — raising money through music to help those in need – finding a cure, helping children around the world, protecting the environment, providing educational materials or musical instruments, aiding in natural disasters, or standing up against domestic violence.

Charities include the Epilepsy Foundation, The Art of Elysium and Childrens Hospital LA, The Conservation Fund, The Indiana University-Kenya Partnership, Taia Peace Foundation, Lupus LA, Save the Children, and the Guitar Center Music Foundation.

Current band members include Greg Grunberg (drums), a veteran of shows such as “Alias” and “Felicity” as well as the NBC hit “Heroes”; James Denton (guitar), currently starring in the ABC hit “Desperate Housewives”; Bob Guiney (vocals), who appeared on “The Bachelor” and on TLC’s “Date My House”; Jesse Spencer (violin) currently starring in the FOX hit “House”; Adrian Pasdar, from “Heroes” and “Desperate Housewives”; Scott Grimes from “American Dad” and “ER,” and rounding out the band are accomplished musicians Chris Kelley (Music Director), Barry Sarna (Eagles), David Leach (Ben Harper), Chris Mostert (Eagles) and child-star turned bass player Brad Savage.

Keeping Up With Kim Kardashian

By Amarylis Martinez

What’s more important than Kim Kardashian’s divorce making headlines? Her charity contribution, of course!

After many rumors circulating regarding her troubled marriage, Kim confirmed on Halloween day that there are irreconcilable differences between her and hubby Kris Humphries.  On October 31, the public was made aware that Kardashian had indeed filed for divorce after 72 days of marriage.

According to Divorce Lawyer Source, divorce statistics show that about eighty percent of all marriages end because of irreconcilable differences.  As sad as this statistic may be, it proves that Kim is one of many going through this tough time right now.  In the midst of a hard time, Kim has found a way to turn the frown upside down…for someone in need.  On November 1, Kim posted a message to her fans on her official blog addressing her divorce, the rumors and her unexpected charity contribution.  Kim Kardashian has donated the value of her wedding gifts to the Dream Foundation, a charity that grants wishes to people facing life threatening illnesses.

The Dream Foundation has confirmed that it is true and the funds have been wired over on November 2.  Although there is no confirmed amount of the contribution that was made, TMZ has reported that a source close to Kim is saying $200,000 has been donated.

Kim has been actively involved with the Dream Foundation in the past and continues to hold a special place in her heart for the cause the Dream Foundation supports.  In an email with the Huffington Post, Erin Lynnch, a spokesperson for the Dream Foundation expressed her gratitude for Kim using this troubled time to help others.  Erin Lynnch was quoted saying:

Kim has a long history of giving to Dream Foundation with her time, financial contributions and simply holding the hands of dreamers facing a terminal illness. We are thankful to have Kim as a part of our service.

Though many may think that Kim’s donation is a way to divert the heat of ‘fake marriage’ or ‘publicity stunt for money’ rumors, the truth of the matter is that her contribution will in fact help others during their greatest time of need – for this, we applaud Kim.

Designer Michael Kors Promotes Cancer Awareness

By Aramis Grant

Since 1981, designer Michael Kors has worked wonders for women’s confidence – filling department stores like Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue with his designs, ultimately causing thousands of women to fill their closets with his trendy and highly recommended brand name clothing – but it is his philanthropic work with cancer research that does far more for women across the board.

As a proud supporter of cancer research and cancer awareness, Kors has continually taken action on the cause against cancer by using his skills and reputation as a designer to contribute to cancer awareness. Kors’ designs for cancer consciousness are directly associated to fundraising for the cause – he has made it so that portions of the proceeds from MICHEAL Michael Kors products go to various cancer-related organizations such as the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, the Mass General Cancer Center, and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

Kors’ previous efforts include working with supermodel Heidi Klum (whom he works side-by-side with on Bravo’s Project Runway) to design a limited edition tee for Saks’ Key to the Cure breast cancer campaign. The $40 tee was made available at Saks Fifth Avenue stores, with proceeds going to charity.

Last year, Kors received the Oliver R. Grace Award for Distinguished Service in Advancing Cancer Research from the Cancer Research Institute, Inc. (CRI) in celebration of his charitable contributions. CRI had the following to say of Kors’ honoring:

Mr. Kors is the leading American fashion designer for luxury accessories and sportswear and is known as a celebrity judge on the hit TV show Project Runway. His support of Saks Fifth Avenue’s Key to the Cure campaign and other cancer causes, as well as his commitment to supporting research and awareness for HIV/AIDS and other immune-related diseases, including diabetes and lupus, together embody the spirit of this prestigious award.

Kors has been creating stylishly charitable products for cancer awareness for years and actively contributes designs during the month of October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Kors’ awareness efforts include the creation of totes, perfume, scarves, and makeup bags.
