Linkin Park Wants To Power the World

1.3 billion people have no access to electricity and rock band, Linkin Park, is ready to do something about it.  Recently launching their Power the World campaign, these rock stars are asking for our help in lighting the world this holiday season.  By donating $10 to powertheworld.org, a family in Haiti will be provided with a renewable, solar light bulb.  These solar light bulbs provide more than just light; they are low in cost and use clean renewable energy, allowing Haitians to save money overtime.  Without electricity children cannot study after dark, parents cannot work after dark and medical clinics cannot stay open.

With Power the World, Linkin Park has set a goal of helping one million families gain access to sustainable energy by 2012 – Haiti is their first project location.  Lead vocalist, Mike Shinoda is quoted saying:

“We chose Haiti for this project because the country faces severe energy poverty.  There are 34 million people in the Western Hemisphere who have no access to modern energy; 8 million of them are in Haiti. By helping Haiti we can make a huge impact, so it’s a great place to start.”

StarsPower invites you to give the gift of light this holiday season.

Arsenal Saves the Children

By Amarylis Martinez

Here at StarsPower we believe in “Blogging a Better Planet” which is why we have chosen to focus on stars’ efforts outside of the U.S. today.  This past weekend, Arsenal Football Club dedicated its Premier League match against Fulham to Save the Children.  Save the Children is Arsenal’s global charity partner, supporting the cause of providing less fortunate children with the necessities for a better life and providing them the chance to grow and reach their full potential.

Deciding to dedicate a game to Save the Children meant more than writing a check and playing soccer in their honor.  Arsenal used their star’s power to make their game day an all day affair in support of their charity and its cause.  Thanks to these soccer playing pros, Emirates Stadium was full of fundraising initiatives.

To kick-start the fund raising process players and staff donated a day’s wages to their global partner foundation.  During warm-ups both Arsenal and Fulham wore Save the Children t-shirts in honor of supporting the charity and its efforts.  Pre game, players Carl Jenkinson and Jack Wilshere surprised fans as they personally sold and collected raffle tickets.  During half-time, Arsenal mascot Gunnersaurus, led a successful monetary collection where fans happily donated to the cause.  50 pence from every game day program sold was donated, along with a portion of the proceeds of Arsenal’s co-branded charity sportsbands being sold in the team store.

Players took their role in this partnership seriously.  When speaking of Save the Children team captain Robin Van Persie said:

“The whole squad was given a presentation by Save the Children recently, who explained what they are doing all over the world.  It’s unbelievable and we really appreciate their work.  We all realize we can’t save the world but we can all do our little bit”

StarsPower is here to say that we can in fact save the world and we are proud of Van Persie’s Arsenal for contributing by helping Save the Children this weekend.

Trey Songz Gives Back This Thanksgiving at Benefit Concert

By Aramis Grant

Hot R&B sensation Trey Songz will be performing at a Thanksgiving benefit concert for his Angels with Heart Foundation on November 25. The Grammy-nominated singer has been compared to the likes of R&B greats Al Greene and Marvin Gaye, for his smooth, sultry voice and “baby making music.”

The fairly new charity, created just last year by the Grammy-nominated singer, was created in effort to engage members of his fan club in taking part in more positive work in their communities. How awesome is that?! His fan club, known as “Trey’s Angels” were encouraged to give back through random acts of kindness, donating their time and more to support the cause of improving the communities they live in and those in surrounding cities, with a special focus on the youth.  The group who took part in Songz’s call-to-action were often referred to as “Angles with Heart,” so Songz settled on that as the name of his foundation.

Songz has teamed up with popular NYC radio station HOT 97 to present the one-day benefit concert, where Songz will be taking the stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The concert is aimed at promoting the amazing mission of the Angels with Hearts Foundation to help underprivileged children and at-risk youth in a variety of ways.

“Because I have been blessed to be in the situation where I am able to touch and be heard by so many people, it’s only right that I use that voice to give back and empower the youth, strengthen families and communities” says Songz on the foundation website.

Declaring November as the official “Angels with Heart” month, Songz will be rounding out this month with his birthday on the 28th and the release of his new album Inevitable,  that drops on November 29. (Happy Birthday, Trey! And congrats on the album!)

The declaration of Angels with Heart month also celebrates the hard work of his devoted members.

“My fans don’t just go hard for me, they go hard for humanity,” said Songz.

Fans are encouraged to contribute to the singer’s efforts by downloading Songz’s video Top of the World, or by downloading the album, Inevitable, as a portion of the proceeds will go to the foundation.  Tickets and VIP packages for the benefit are available now, here on Ticketmaster.

Can’t attend the concert? Don’t worry … the performance will be internationally broadcast for those who miss out.

Paris Hilton – a Hilton heiress commonly known for making headlines in the Hollywood scene isn’t who many may perceive her to be.  For years, Paris has identified herself as an animal lover and activist.  She has also contributed to countless charities supporting causes such as breast cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, homelessness and world hunger.

Just yesterday, November 15, Hilton took to Twitter to share her experiences while in Bali.  Tweeting pictures of her time spent with orphans and raising awareness of Indonesian stray dogs, Paris expressed how great it felt to “give back to those in need”.

Leonardo DiCaprio Raises Millions For Charity On His Special Day

By Amarylis Martinez

November 5:  $3 million.  November 11:  $1.3 million.  In a week’s time, Leonardo DiCaprio has raised millions of dollars for more than one cause.  Just six days before his birthday, DiCaprio co-chaired the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) first annual Art + Film Gala.  Helping make the event a success by raising $3 million for the art of film making, the actor’s philanthropic efforts did not stop there.

In true humanitarian fashion, Leonardo DiCaprio celebrated his birthday while raising money for his charity, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.  DiCaprio’s foundation supports wildlife conservation and provides disaster relief in countries such as Haiti.

11.11.11, a date deemed lucky by many, was oddly enough Leo’s actual birth date – as well as the date his newest film, J. Edgar, hit theaters.  With much to celebrate, DiCaprio rented out New York’s Avenue night club where an array of A-listers gathered together to celebrate their dear friend’s 37th birthday.  The guest list included family members, Victoria’s Secret models, assorted billionaires, and celebrities such as Russell Simmons, Robert De Niro, Naomi Campbell and Edward Norton – to name a few.

DiCaprio, who threw this birthday bash for himself, raised money for his charity by having a cash bar and auctioning off luxury items.  One popular luxury item, a 15-litre bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne – hand painted by artist Peter Tunney, was auctioned off for $50,000.  By the end of the night a total of $1.3 million had been raised effortlessly, all while partying the night away.

While some may think that birthdays are all about the person being celebrated, DiCaprio found a way to make it about others.  The J. Edgar star continues to use his power in support of his causes by raising funds in his everyday life.

Rolex Announces Initiative Mentors at NYC Gala

By Aramis Grant

Rolex held its bi-annual Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative Gala, last night at New York’s Lincoln Center, celebrating its 2010-2011 mentorships and announced new mentors for 2012-2013.

The Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative is an international philanthropic program created to assist extraordinary, rising artists to achieve their full potential. It seeks out these artists from around the world and brings them together with great masters, for a year of creative collaboration in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.

The six internationally recognized master artists announced last night, will serve as mentors in dance, film, literature, music, theater and visual arts in 2012-2013.

Each mentor “will select a talented young artist for a year of creative dialogue and exchange,” as expressed on the initiative press release. The mentors are: Canadaian author Margaret Atwood, French theater director Patrice Chèreau, Brazilian singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil, South African visual artist William Kentridge, Taiwanese choreographer Lin Hwai-min and American film editor and sound designer Walter Murch.

As explained by the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, “Each mentor will spend at least six weeks, over the course of a year, with his or her protégé. The individual pair will determine the structure, time and place of those meetings. In the past, some protégés have chosen to move to their mentors’ cities to allow for more sustained interactions, while others have decided to conduct their relationship by phone and email with regular visits to each other’s homes, studios, movie sets or rehearsal rooms. Each protégé receives $25,000 to support his or her participation in the programme. At the conclusion of the mentoring year, each protégé is eligible for an additional $25,000 for the creation of a new work.”

Past mentors include Martin Scorsese, Toni Morrison and Mira Nair among others.

Last night, a bunch of A-list celebrities attended the gala including Scorsese, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, and Paula Patton (who before starring in “Precious,” shadowed Denzel Washington). Also present, was Tony-award winning director Julie Taymor (her work includes Broadway’s The Lion King and Spider Man: Turn off the Dark — Taymor was a mentor during the initiative’s third cycle).

Winter Just Got A Little More Fabolous

By Amarylis Martinez

With the temperatures dropping and an early snowfall in New York City it is imperative that all New Yorkers bundle up.  According to the Coalition for the Homeless, each night more than 40,000 people – including more than 16,000 children – experience homelessness in New York City.  Def Jam rapper and Brooklyn native, Fabolous has taken a stand for this cause launching his first annual Three Kings Coat Drive through his newly founded charity foundation, A Fabolous Way.

In an interview with Pix11 Fabolous was quoted saying:

The winter is coming and it’s getting cold and people need coats and people don’t have the opportunity to go out and buy themselves coats. So, we wanted to encourage other people who have coats to donate or donate winter gear. There’s plenty of people with two or three coats in their closets that they never wear.

The Three Kings Coat Drive is being supported by two well known icons in the City That Never Sleeps, Yankee Robinson Cano and Giants player Ahmad Bradshaw.  In coalition with New York Cares, Dr. Jays and Hot97 the Three Kings Coat Drive began on November 1 and will last until December 1 with the goal of collecting 100,000 coats this winter.  All Dr. Jays clothing store locations in New York City and New Jersey will serve as the coat drop-off sites.  As a token of appreciation, every donor will receive 10% off their next coat purchase at participating Dr. Jays’ stores.

During the Three Kings Coat Drive launch, Fabolous was present at Dr. Jays in Manhattan collecting coats.  Appropriately, the first coat donated was a popular New York Yankees jacket.  Surprisingly, singer Trey Songz (who was in town promoting his new album) stopped by to show his support for Fabolous and his first annual Three Kings Coat Drive.

Fabolous has been actively spreading the word and creating awareness by personally tweeting about the coat drive.  Anyone who takes a picture donating a coat will be retweeted and followed by Fabolous himself.  Help spread the word and tweet using the hashtag #3kingscoatdriveNYC.
